Alaskan Wolves

Normally a grey wolf will have a soft tan nose and a pale grey (sometimes dark grey) forehead. The front of the ears are most often a white or a creamy white. The back of the ears is usually a gold or tan color. The belly side of the grey wolf is normally a white or creamy white. The back of the animal is usually palest in the neck areas and the black tipped guard hairs get more prominent in the lower back, often with a hint of tan or the rump. The underfur on the back is most often a creamy white, but can also range from a pale grey to a soft tan. (Pictured above are some examples of grey colorations.

Mountable Black Wolves

A typical black wolf will have a black muzzle and forehead. Often times it will have a little silver mixed in. The back of the neck will usually start a solid line of black hairs down the center of the back to the tail. The sides of the neck and the body usually have an increasing amount of silver hairs as you drop from top to bottom. Most specimens have some sort of chest blaze, which is nothing more than a white spot on the chest, although some are quite pronounced. Most specimens will have a silver gray belly. There is almost no such thing in the wild that is pure black.

Mountable Arctic Whites

White wolves primarily come from the high arctic areas of Canada and Alaska. The farther south one goes the fewer they will find. Some of the characteristics other than color are a very thin leather, which is easily damaged. They are usually a smaller size and have shorter legs. I have been asked many times for a pure white snow wolf, and I have heard tales many times of people who have seen one or caught one. Even though I have seen thousands of wolves over the years, close examination always revealed some black tips along the lower back and top of the tail.
